Harman Kardon Allure is one of the smart speakers you should definitely take into account if you are looking to buy an Amazon Alexa powered device. This speaker has a great design and very nice price to quality ratio. This review will tell you everything you need for making your purchase decision.
The first thing you may notice that this thing looks really premium! It has great sleekly design. It’s divided into two parts: the top section is made of hard plastic while the bottom is aluminum.
Some people think that the top part is made of glass, but it isn’t. It is plastic. This has both its advantages and disadvantages. Plastic is more durable and you will not break it if you accidentally drop it on the ground. But you have to take care of it and remove the dirt with a soft material only. If you do it with hard material, you may leave small scratches which make it look not as good as it was at the beginning.
The plastic cover is transparent and it has a glowing tube module inside. This module glows with pleasant grey-blue color gradient and is looking nice and relaxing. Unfortunately, you can’t adjust or customize the LED glowing rythm. It just glows. And the rhythm is always constant meaning it doesn’t pick the rhythm of the current song. It has its own glowing rhythm and this rhythm is repeated again and again.
The LED glows grey-blue when the Alexa is on and is glowing red when you switch it off.
Gorgeous aluminum fill at the bottom is covered with holes and perforations. But that’s not just for the aesthetics. Three individual drivers are located at the bottom of this speaker to give you 360-degree audio. At the very bottom, there is a 90 mm subwoofer which makes this device much more powerful than Amazon Echo.
Keep in mind, that this speaker is NOT portable. It’s meant to be stationary. There is no built-in battery and you can’t it with you outside unless you have a source of power. But anyway the power cord adds restrictions and makes this thing less comfortable. If you also have children or pets they may accidentally touch the cable and drop the device.
The top part has all the controls. When I got this thing I thought that the location and responsiveness of all the controls should be more intuitive. It’s not as intuitive as I expected it to be. The buttons are not physical, they are all touch-sensitive and when you press them you don’t see any tactile or visual response.
But you don’t need to use this buttons because this speaker is voice activated and it has built-in Alexa! You can use all the power of the Alexa features with this Harman Kardon Allure smart speaker.
The Bluetooth button is located at the back side. I don’t know why they decided to put that button there. The device has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. There are no extra physical features like NFC which allows pairing the device with a smartphone. There is no 3.5 mm port. This may be a disadvantage for some people but I don’t think so. Right now almost all smart speakers use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and the 3.5 mm jack isn’t required for the most cases.
As I have mentioned there is a Wi-Fi and you have to connect it by Wi-Fi to make Alexa work. If you are not using Wi-Fi you can use Bluetooth instead.
Unfortunately, you can’t pair this with other Alexa devices or with other Allure speakers to make all of them playing the same music. But this may be fixed in future software updates.
You cannot use this speaker for phone calls or for receiving incoming calls. These limitations are in the current model and manufacturer will probably remove these things in future.
As for the application, there is an application for your smartphone. You can use it for setting up the device and for connecting it by Wi-Fi. It is really straightforward and you will not have any problems with it even if you have never used Alexa devices.
Microphones of Harman Kardon Allure are pretty sensitive allowing you to give voice commands even if the device plays loud music. It can pick your voice at 70% volume even if you stand far from the device. You can’t do such a thing with the Echo Dot. If you have the Echo Dot you have to shout. This feature is provided by special Far-field voice recognition system with 4 microphones built into the device.
Most of you guys are using smart speakers not only for Alexa but also for listening to the music. And you know what? Kardon Allure will not disappoint you. It gives a really good sound with deep base. Moreover, it is very loud. With a 70% volume, it fills a large room. The sound is clean and detailed. Of course, it’s not loud enough to shake everything around you but it’s very loud and detailed.
It sounds a little bit better than Sony xb40, JBL Extreme, Bose Soundlink Revolve+.
If you are looking for an Amazon Alexa speaker that not only gives you control over your smart devices but also gives very good and clear sound this is one of the best options on the market.
